On July 9th, 2019, the Jane Pauley Community Health Center, Inc. officially opened their new location at 75th and Shadeland, in the former Marsh Supermarket building, expanding their services into Lawrence Township. This is the 22nd Health Center the organization has opened. The grand opening celebration was kicked off with an Indianapolis City-County Council Proclamation of the date as “Jane Pauley Community Health Center Day”, as shared by local City-County Councillor Michael McQuillen, who attended the opening. Jane Pauley was present for the opening, as was 5th District Representative Susan Brooks, who spoke about the need to increase Federal funding for community health organizations. Senator Jim Merrick addressed the need to overcome the stigma of mental health problems and drug addiction as well as food insecurity.
Broadcasting icon Jane Pauley is a graduate of Warren Central High School and Indiana University, and started her storied career in journalism here in Indianapolis at WISH TV. She was the first woman to anchor a weekday evening newscast, at Chicago’s WMAQ, before going on to achieve even greater success across a range of high profile positions as a news journalist. After battling her own issues with bipolar depression, she became an outspoken advocate for mental health issues. In 2009 the Jane Pauley Community Health Center was established, and awarded Federal status in 2011.
The Center brings comprehensive health care services to the community, regardless of a patient’s ability to pay, making it a vital service in our neighborhood. Primary healthcare, dental care, and behavioral health care are among the Center’s offerings, which is part of the Community Health Network.
SRA applauds this re-use of what was a large vacant space with not a great deal of potential. Turning the empty building into a community-serving health center is a great addition to our neighborhood.
